Below we invite you to read all about this shooting program. Our great success is founded on delivering exactly what we say we will—so although you will find our descriptions lengthy—they are completely accurate and thorough. Don’t leave anything to chance!

The hunting:
Welcome to wingshooting Heaven! Once a province of Argentina, the country of Uruguay is just a twenty-five minute flight across the river from the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. You will not need to change airports, just make a simple gate-to-gate connection in the Buenos Aires International airport (EZE).
Uruguay is roughly the size of the state of Washington, and there one will find almost no difference in the food, culture, and social customs that exist next door in Argentina. Far and away, Uruguay is the safest, most politically stable, and just plain friendly country in all of South America—here one will experience wingshooting in its purest form— like it must have been on the prairies in the USA a hundred years ago…
One of our guests just recently made this simple, but powerful observation: “I can’t remember the last hunt I was on where I did not hear noise pollution from one of the following sources: aircraft, automobiles, tractors, chainsaws, cell phones, oilfield equipment, or barking dogs! The only time I ever saw another hunter that was outside of my group was in the airport. In rural Uruguay the “hand of man” goes unnoticed. I think it just might be the quietest and most peaceful place I have ever been”.
Uruguay boasts some of the best duck hunting in the world, as well as excellent hunting for upland Perdiz. Our access to over 25,000 acres of rice fields and rich pastureland ensures great shooting every day of the season. Our season (winter in the Southern Hemisphere) runs from May 12th – July 31st for the duck, Perdiz, and pigeon combo. The Perdiz season is not open in August, but the duck season is still in the peak of the migration. Limited pigeon hunting (subject to good local scouting reports) is also available on a semi-regular basis—but not guaranteed to be available.
August is arguably one of the best months for duck hunting the shooting is not any higher volume this month, but there is simply a larger variety of ducks available. This is the peak of the migration for Rosybills, Pintails, and Widgeon. However, those who desire to combine great duck shooting with upland Perdiz hunting must plan to come between May 12th and July 31st—the last day of Perdiz season. During this time one will still be able to shoot some of the big ducks, but the action will include on average, approximately 60% Silver Teal, Speckled Teal, and Brazilian Ducks— watch the duck hunting videos! The earlier in the season, the more teal you will harvest.
In addition to the vast area of rice fields, in the afternoons we hunt the many nearby potholes—which are legally baited with rice and corn on a daily basis—ensuring superb shooting for puddlers, and diver duck hunting alike, as well as bonus Uruguay pigeon hunting. Depending on the time of the Uruguay duck hunting season, shooters can expect to probably harvest at least five species of ducks unique to South America, and possibly up to eight (Rosybilled Pochard, Brazilian Ducks, Yellow Billed Pintail, Silver Teal, Speckled Teal, Chiloe Widgeon, and Red Shoveler, and White-Faced Tree ducks).
The afternoons offer prairie pothole duck hunting, or busy upland hunting for Perdiz over our well-trained upland bird hunting dogs, Brittany Spaniels. Depending on scouting results, afternoon pigeon hunting is sometimes available either in roosts, or in corn fields over decoys. Pigeon shooting is not a high volume affair in this part of the country, but fast-action hunts expending up to four boxes of shells per hunter do happen. Count on a great afternoon of Perdiz, but please consider the Picazuro pigeon hunting a bonus item in your consideration of this trip. Sometimes they are really in there, and sometimes they are not.
The accommodations:
Often times, comfortable, close accommodations and great waterfowl hunting are mutually exclusive experiences—not at Los Gauchos destinations! Our wonderful 7,000 square foot estancia, The Uruguay Duck Hunting Club has been updated and refurnished just to meet the needs of the traveling wildfowler. It boasts four bedrooms, which are dobule-occupancy rooms. You must have six shooters in your group in order to book the lodge privately. To maintain the highest standards of quality, we never accept more than eight hunters per week. Extra non-hunting guests in the same room are not limited.
There is a formal dining room, and a very comfortable Living Room with fabulous leather chairs to relax after a good day of hunting, and a huge fireplace. The estancia has a telephone, but no internet access as of yet (hopefully available with satellite equipment in 2009). Right now, phone cards can be purchased for reasonable prices. For those who must use the internet, there is a town located fifteen minutes from the lodge that we can take you to. It also has a hospital and a pharmacy, in case immediate medical treatment is needed.
Happy hour! It begins just after arrival from the PM hunt. Our well stocked bar consists of premium wine and local, flavorful beer: Absolut, Johnny Walker Black Label, Bombay Sapphire, and more—can be purchased at Duty Free to enjoy at The Uruguay Duck Hunting Club.
Fine cuisine is prepared daily by our live-in gourmet chef, and served by our gracious hostesses and waitresses. Meals consist of local Uruguayan fare, and appetizers of fresh cheeses and sausages, as well as samplings of wild game that you actually harvest, at every meal. Lunches typically consist of superb local beef, along with free-ranging pork and poultry served in the form of Milanesas (these filets are breaded like a Veal Parmesan)—served with huge salads, plus loaves of fresh bread. Beef is served at dinner as well in the form of filet mignon, in addition to cannelloni, wood fired Sicilian style pizzas, and brochettes of Perdiz too. Very fresh seafood caught just the night before in a nearby port is also part of our fare. Rich desserts, imported German beers, and fine wines from Argentina, and Chile complement all meals.
Trip details:
The trip is a Saturday toThursday, or Saturday to Tuesday proposition depending how long one wishes to hunt (5 days is the standard hunt, 3 days minimum) and on whether or not one wishes to spend some time in Buenos Aires, or the luxurious resort city of Punta del Este, before the hunting begins. The 5 day trip always ends with a ½ day of duck shooting, followed by an evening flight back to the USA.
Therefore, expect to leave the USA on a Friday , and take a non-stop flight from Miami to Montevideo, Uruguay. Or you take an overnight flight from MIA, JFK, or DFW to Montevideo, with a stopover in Buenos Aires. Many clients elect to deplane in Buenos Aires and spend a day and night there before their trip to Uruguay. While not at all obligatory, most clients elect to stay the night on Saturday at one of the city’s many luxurious hotels—where one can take in all the sights, and enjoy the great steakhouses, Tango shows, local shops, and superb nightlife— and we will be happy to arrange it all for you!
The program calls for all guests to arrive on the fields shooting ducks Saturday afternoon. We shall hunt ducks every morning, and every afternoon. In order to protect the integrity of our marshes the afternoon duck hunts are limited to the shooting of trading ducks and pigeons over area potholes. . This practice ensures consistent shooting for all groups throughout the season.
On the last day of the hunt, shooters will have a ½ day hunt (typically ducks, but for the species of their choice) followed by an evening flight back to the USA—with either a direct flight to Miami or a short stopover in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
