Cities in Peru


Cuzco or Cusco is a city in the southeast part of Peru. This ancient city is located near the Urubamba Valley (Sacred Valley) of the Andes mountain range.The city has a population of about 300,000 residents, triple the population it contained 20 years ago. The altitude of the city is about 3,500 m or 11,500 feet.

Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. It is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru. This city in Peru has become a major tourist destination and receives almost a million visitors a year from all over the world.


From Lima the best way to reach Cusco is by air. The flight from Lima to Cusco is about an hour and Los Gauchos can assist with airfare to/from Cusco. Another alternative would be train, which is a 10 hour ride from Lima.

The weather from April to October is very comfortable, warm and dry. The temperature ranges from 5.0° to 20° Celsius. The Peru rainy season starts in November and it lasts until May. The rain is light in November and December and as the season continues the rain becomes more intense. The temperature does not differ between summer and winter seasons. Winter is cold at night and during the first few hours in the morning. Ttemperature rise until noon. On sunny days the temperature can reache 20°C. We recommend packing warm clothing and rain gear during the rainy season.

PLAZA DE ARMAS (Main Square): This is where Francisco Pizarro, the founder of Lima, declared the area for the square (1535), as well as the location for the Government House (now known as the Government Palace), the Cathedral and the Cabildo (Town Hall). Today, this square continues to occupy the same original area, in the middle of which there is a splendid bronze fountain dating back to 1650. The residence of the President of Peru is located in the Plaza de Armas and a sight to see is the changing of the guard everyday at 11:45 AM.

MUSEUM OF PERUVIAN CULTURE: Days and Hours Open: Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Saturdays from 10 am to 2:30 pm. This museum showcases Peruvian popular art (ceramics, textiles, leather work and religious images).

Currency and Money in Peru


The national currency of Peru is the Nuevo Sol. Major credit cards are accepted in most restaurants, hotels, and retail stores. American currency (USD) is preferred and accepted. ATMS are found all over Lima and most US bank cards are accepted in Peru ATMs. Please use caution as with any large city and at any ATM.
